Exhibition spaces

Photo: Virve Laustela, The Finnish Museum of Photography

The Finnish Museum of Photography' has four exhibition spaces: Main Exhibition Space, Project Space, Process Space and Angle Space. The museum's exhibition team plans the exhibition programme based on the museum's exhibition strategy, looking two to three years ahead into the future. The exhibitions at Project Space are selected annualy in an open call.

The total area of exhibition space at the museum is approximately 800 sq m. The museum holds 8–12 exhibitions annually. Every year, the museum also holds exhibitions outside its own premises.

The exhibitions staged in the Main exhibition space come into being in a variety of ways: on the basis of an interesting suggestion, after inspiration from the museum's collections, as part of a research project, or as an international collaboration. The exhibitions are planned in consultation with experts and curators outside the museum.

The exhibitions in the Project Space are selected through an annual open call. The call is open to all makers of photographic art, whether professionals or students. Teams can also submit applications for the open call. The museum's exhibition team goes through the entries submitted through the open call and selects five exhibitions for presentation each year.

The Process Space is used for audience development workshops and seminars, and for exhibiting collaboration projects. There is no open call for this space.

The Angle space (Collection corner "Kuvakulma") presents works in the museum's collection and projects that draw on the museum's collection.

Exhibition programme planning

The exhibition activities of the Finnish Museum of Photography lie at the intersection of art and culture. Through its exhibition activities, the museum presents Finnish and international contemporary photography, while highlighting the rich history of photography, and photographic culture and the changes within it.

The museum's exhibition team plans the exhibition programme based on the museum's exhibition strategy, looking two to three years into the future. The exhibition strategy incorporates both Finnish and international photographers, and the various genres within photography. A single exhibition often incorporates a variety of themes and styles. For more information about the exhibition activities of the Finnish Museum of Photography, browse the archive of past exhibitions.
